Event Recap

“Winning isn’t the Goal. Becoming a Winner is.” – Brandon Guyer
Thank you to former University of Virginia and Major League Baseball player, Brandon Guyer, for hosting a virtual workshop in partnership with the Youth Sports Mental Health & Wellness Alliance. Guyer’s Major League Mindset Philosophy workshop, hosted virtually on February 17 provided tools to coaches and parents to instill confidence, focus, and resilience in youth athlets.
In the session Guyer discussed key strategies for preparing athletes before a game, encouraging them after a poor performance, overcoming self-limiting fears, and maintaining focus before, during, and after a game.
Core Principles:
- Control the Controllables: Focus on effort, attitude, and preparation, not outcomes or opponents.
- Standards > Goals: Build systems and habits (routines) that lead to success, rather than chasing abstract goals.
- Separate Identities: Develop distinct “Major League Identities” as a great player and a great person, so self-worth isn’t solely tied to performance.
- Embrace Adversity: View challenges as opportunities to get better, not obstacles.
- Build Systems: Implement AM/PM routines, pre-game/in-game routines, and post-game routines to create consistency and trust.
- Resilience & Reset: Learn to reset quickly after mistakes using techniques like breathwork and journaling.
